Mindfulness in therapy
Regulating the nervous system using mindfulness and grounding techniques in therapy
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the process of paying attention to what’s happening in the present moment with kindness and curiosity. It often involves focusing on breathing, how the body feels or slow movements which helps us ‘ground’ ourselves and feel calmer.
You might be wondering what meditation has to do with teen therapy but research has shown that a mindfulness practice can help improve emotion regulation (being able to calm down), stress levels, concentration and feeling less critical or judgemental of self or others. Mindfulness is often incorporated into the therapeutic process if young people are open to trying it.
Help is here
It’s incredibly hard seeing your child struggle. As a parent we often wish we could just make it all better. Your child might be feeling too much - perhaps they are anxious, sad or overwhelmed or they might be quite emotionally shut down, numb or aloof. Mindfulness can really help young people find emotional balance - learn how to self-soothe and feel more connected.
What if my young person doesn’t want to do mindfulness?
Not all young people want to practise mindfulness and for some people it’s not appropriate. That’s why any activities suggested in our therapy sessions together are an invitation and young people know that they’re in charge of their sessions. We work collaboratively to find the right interventions for their individual needs.
Is mindfulness religious?
Although it originates from ancient buddhist practices, Jon Kabat-Zinn created a secular, non-religious mindfulness approach which is what we use in therapy sessions and therefore is appropriate to practise with any religious or atheist background.
